fter a deep tissue massage at Elements of Bodywork, you may have heard us say that a 20 minute Epsom salt bath would help reduce soreness and aid in the recovery from having deep work on overly tensed and short-locked muscles. Most of us enjoy a warm bath, as its very relaxing. But, why Epsom salt, and how does it really help?

Epsom salt is not actually a salt, but a natural pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate that is freely soluble in water. Scientific research shows that both magnesium and sulfate are easily absorbed through the skin, thus making an epsom salt bath the most ideal and enjoyable method of obtaining its health benefits. Magnesium does a lot for our internal systems of the body, including the reduction of inflammation, the regulation of activities of over 325 enzymes, aiding the proper functions of our muscles and nerves, and assisting in the prevention of arterial hardening. Sulfates help improve nutrient absorption, flush toxins from the body, and ease migraine headaches.

Epsom salts have been known to benefit the body and mind for hundreds of years. A few of the well-known benefits include easing of muscle strain, curing skin problems, soothing the pain and aches of muscles, relaxing the nervous system, and improving the processes at which our body heals cuts and recovers from colds. Not bad for a product that costs about $2 a pound.

Experts say that taking Epsom salt baths three times a week can help you look better, feel better, and increase your energy. Earlier I stated that it can cure skin problems. Magnesium sulfate has been used effectively to aid the fight against acne and blemishes. So, how does it help you feel better and increase your energy.

Epsom salt is easily absorbed through the skin by use of warm water, which helps replenish the body’s magnesium levels. Magnesium assists in the production of seratonin, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the regulation of learning, sleep, and vasoconstriction. Seratonin greatly influences one’s overall well-being, as it helps regulate mood, temper, anxiety, and relieve depression. Magnesium can also increase one’s energy, by encouraging the production of ATP, the fuel cells of our body.

So, next time you need to recover from a therapeutic bodywork session, want to boost your body’s energy levels, or enhance your overall mood, soak for 15 minutes in a warm bath with 2 cups of Epsom salt. An inexpensive self-treatment that is easily enjoyable.
